Having visited Boayan in the 90s, I know what a special place it is in the world, and have never forgotten it's pristine islands and seas, even then being threatened by illegal logging and over-fishing from Chinese factory boats. It would be a tremendous loss to see such an area become just another destination for the rich and privileged. I can only hope that this effort to protect and save the region will succeed. Tourism would be best served by preserving this natural habitat. Tourists don't want to see more kiosks, restos, and prosaic commercial developement. Nature is the best we can offer them for an unforgettable experience. But alas, our government and developers only see the shine of lucre.

I was once hired as consultant for the Strategic Environmental Plan for San Vicente Palawan. We were the group who prepared the environmental plan for San Vicente to save the natural beauty of the place. It was year 1995 that we did tried to empower the people to manage their natural resources.
Sad to note that some people particularly the foriegners occupied some of the islands and maybe destroyed the natural beauty of San Vicente. We should stop them!!! Save San Vicente!!!!!!!!!!!

I admire the community-based initiatives to save whatever is left of our natural reserves. I'm an OFW and perhaps when the dust settles and the petition wins the same initiatives can be made known to other OFWs like me. An idea that OFWs can play a major role in eco-tourism can perhaps be explored. My respect to you all!

I've been in Palawan and it is fun to visit myriad beautiful islands and islets. Taking a grasp on the shore of Boayan is a captivating scenario because of its wondrous floras and faunas and even the perfect picturesque of the sunrise and sunset. The island is for sale, Palawan is for sale or should I say the whole earth is for sale - the wildlife is always at stake. Commercialism is not always the key - it is an option whether to destroy our nature or to live peacefully with it. In order to promote tourism we do not need to take down another tree or another island hence why should the government think of having hotels and accommodation infrastructures in one area not in every island (there are numerous boats to take them in different islands thus this will give opportunity of giving the marginalized people to have a work that will be benefiting to both the community and the nature). Philippines is already dilapidated lets not make it worst.

i have never been to boayan but this story has happened many many times before in so many parts of world.... "development" is such a misused and misunderstood word, and is so often used to cover up greed. but it is heartening to see how many people signed this petition. people instinctively know this is wrong. there is still hope for the remaining 'pristine' spots in the philippines. please let us know, aside from signing this petition, what else can we do to help preserve boayan?

The place has already been featured on "Trip an Trip" and "Jesica Soho's Report" but on different views - tourism with sustainable development, and threat to the environment, respectively. I became curious because of the contrasting opinions. My judgment is that Boayan Island should be left untouched; it's too beautiful to become a tourist hub. I can't imagine it having hotels, airport, divers and people in swim suits.Protection of the reserves and ecosystem should be a priority.

It worries me a lot that this is happening. I've been to Palawan thrice and each place that I had visited is uniquely awe inspiring. I have always admired Palawan's laid back style and care for the environment as shared with me by Mayor Hagedorn. Now it's sad to know that some place like San Vicente is succumbing to modern development/commercialization, and people don't realize the wide effect of these coming changes in the name of money. It stuns the mind that anyone should wish to destroy a symphonic equilibrium of nature so that some perverted demand of unthinking people can be met.

This qualifies as an environmental right that has to be protected for generations to come or a transgenerational right that has been upheld by a Philippine Supreme Court Ruling.

The authorities who dare allow this to happen are shooting themselves in the foot - Tourism in Palawan has been supposedly developed with sustainability in mind, the efforts of endless groups of NGO's and volunteers, eco-tourism consultants etc that have all helped over the last few decades null and void if this were to happen - the very reason why so many people travel to Palawan and surrounding islands is because of its reputation of eco-tourism and sustainability. Having been to Boayan several times over the last 10 years, I doubt i would ever go there again to sit on a sun lounger whilst being offered a cheap coffee with powdered milk!

There is a marine resource development bill (bills 606,1803 and 4240 authored by Reps. A.D. Maranon III et al which would set up marine protected areas in all coastal municipalities and cities. This was approved by the house committee on aquaculture and fisheries resources and committee on appropriation. It requires establishment of at least one marine protected area within the municiapl waters covering a minimum total area of 10 hectares.the Boayan situation qualifies for this bill!!
